Vincent Okoth’s Voko Engineering Showcases in Juba, South Sudan

Vincent Okoth, a 38-year-old innovator from Central Gem Ward, is the mastermind behind Voko Engineering, a company dedicated to manufacturing agricultural tools and equipment. His company specializes in creating machines designed to ease the farming process, including equipment that separates maize seeds from cobs, beans, sorghum, and millet from chaff, and machines that extract oil from sunflower seeds. These tools are crucial for farmers looking to streamline labor-intensive processes, and Mr. Okoth’s machines offer innovative solutions tailored to local agricultural needs. His journey in this field began while working at the Agriculture Technology Development Centre, where he observed the existing machines and identified several areas that could be improved to serve farmers better.
Motivated by this experience, Mr. Okoth joined forces with four other like-minded individuals to design a more efficient machine with enhanced capabilities. The new machine they developed represents a significant advancement, incorporating features allowing it to perform multiple functions easily and with versatility. His machine’s impressive functionality was displayed at the ongoing Trade Fair in Juba, South Sudan, where Okoth was a featured exhibitor. The machine caught the attention of participants and stakeholders for its ability to handle diverse farm produce with a single, versatile mechanism. This exposure has highlighted Okoth’s innovation and the potential impact of such technology on regional agriculture.
According to Mr. Okoth, the machine offers a viable business opportunity for anyone looking to provide services to large-scale and small-scale farmers. Priced at Ksh. 120,000, the machine is equipped with a gasoline engine and an adjustable sieve system that accommodates various seed sizes, and it includes a winnowing feature that makes post-harvest processing much simpler for farmers. This combination of efficiency and versatility is designed to reduce labor and improve output, providing an affordable solution to agricultural communities. Farmers and service providers can leverage this machine to boost productivity and, in turn, strengthen the local agricultural economy.
In line with Siaya County’s youth empowerment agenda, led by Governor James Orengo, Mr. Okoth and his team plan to train local youth in manufacturing and maintaining these machines. Okoth aims to create more job opportunities by equipping young people with practical skills and fostering a new generation of skilled innovators in Siaya County. Governor Orengo’s emphasis on youth empowerment aligns with Voko Engineering’s mission, as the county supports employment and economic development initiatives. Additionally, the county government’s broader agenda includes supporting local manufacturing, bolstering the local economy and creating a more self-sufficient Siaya. The county hopes to promote sustainable development and support entrepreneurs like Okoth through these efforts.
