The Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Hon Sicily Kanini Kariuki, called on me in my office earlier today.

We discussed ways in which we as the County Government can foster our relationship with the National Government to improve provision of water to wananchi, to save them the agony of walking long distances in search of the vital commodity.

The CS was impressed with the steps we have taken to end perennial water shortages in Kilifi County, including laying out over 600km of pipeline network as well as venturing in ground water exploration in hard-to-reach areas. This has improved water services access from 20% in 2013 to over 70% in 2020 in Kilifi County. We are aiming to hit 80% in water provision before the end of this year, 2021.

The CS assured us that they are fast tracking their strategic investments such as the Baricho-Kakuyuni mega project, which will avail more water to wananchi once complete in a few months. The expansion of the Mzima Spring II Project will also help address water scarcity by availing adequate supplies to residents of Mariakani, Kaloleni, Rabai and Mombasa County, thereby reducing over-reliance on the Baricho Water station by Kilifi and Mombasa counties.
