Emperor Haile Selassie was the first foreign dignitary invited to Kenya by Mzee Jomo Kenyatta after independence. The Ethiopian leader attended the 1964 Madaraka Day Celebration as the Chief Guest. The celebrations marked Kenya’s 1st anniversary of self-rule.
