Sustainable Solutions to Flooding Menace In Sight

Siaya County Deputy Governor H. E. Dr. James Okumbe over the weekend further distributed some 158 bags of maize, 46 bags of beans, and 8 bales of porridge flour to the households displaced by floods in West Alego, Usonga West ugenya wards while launching the search for a more sustainable solution to the flood menace in the County. The County Government of Siaya together with partners have provided weekly rations to the over 3,000 households living in Sidundo, Lunyu, Mahero, Nyambare, Sidok and Siginga Camps since the floods began.
In mitigation efforts against COVID-19, Dr. Okumbe requested the victims whose homes are not flooded now that the waters have subsided in some areas, to decamp in order to decongest the camps.
“The water levels have gone down and some areas are now dry, we are humbly requesting those whose homes are now conducive for normal operations to consider going back. We have the data of all victims and we shall continue supporting them wherever they are as we keep safe at this time of the pandemic,” — Dr. Okumbe.
The victims are also set to benefit from the relief seed distribution program for local vegetable rolled out by His Excellency the Governor once they settle back to their homesteads to cushion them from the adverse effects of the calamity.
The County Government of Siaya has also sustained 3 doctors and 6 community Health Volunteers in every camp offering mobile clinic services as they prevent and control the eruption of opportunistic diseases which are likely to occur in the camps and at home for those who are decamping.
The Deputy Governor who was accompanied by the CEC for Education Mrs. Mary Olute, Chief Officer for Governance Mr. Joseph Omondi and Mr. Matthew Oluoch from the Governor’s Service Delivery Unit further corroborated the Governor’s recent directive that the World Bank project earlier launched to address irrigation systems along River Nzoia would soon resume to provide long term solutions to the frequent flooding menace upon conclusion of the ongoing negotiations around land compensation and project funding.
