Today we take a tour of the oceans and lakes to find the Maritime Police Unit. It is a unit under the National Police Service, with its headquarters at the Kilindini harbor, that is tasked with enforcing maritime laws and countering threats on our territorial waters by keeping vigil on maritime operations and activities.
The unit has been instrumental in the prevention and monitoring of narcotic trade, illegal fishing, maritime pollution, transnational crimes such as human smuggling and trafficking. They also conduct counter-terrorism measures, boarding, search and rescue operations. The team is composed of highly trained and dedicated personnel and has been involved in developing curriculum and training for emerging maritime outfits in the region.
Maritime Police Unit has stations (detachments) next to our key maritime resources such as Lake Victoria, Lake Baringo, Lake Turkana, and stations along the vast Indian ocean. Some of the detachments include Shimoni, Kilindini, Lamu, Ngomeni, Mokowe, Lapsset, Port Victoria, Lake Turkana, Lake Baringo, and Kisumu. Maritime Police unit has been exemplary and always delivers on its mandate and is a key player under the multi-agency outfit, Kenya Coast Guard Service.
