Rasanga Launches 300 Bed Capacity Isolation Units to Combat COVID-19

Siaya County Governor His Excellency Cornel Rasanga Amoth has launched the construction of three isolation units spread across Siaya County with the main unit at Siaya Referral Hospital another at Ambira Health Facility and one at Bondo Sub-County Health facility to support the county in combating the deadly Coronavirus.
The construction of the 200-bed capacity isolation units is expected to be completed in 30 days. Bondo and Ambira Health Facilities will each have a 50-bed capacity isolation unit while the Siaya facility shall have the 200-bed capacity.
The Governor while speaking after witnessing the signing of the contract for the isolation units at the Siaya Referral Hospital earlier today said that once the projects are complete, they will be equipped with beds, scanners and test kits to provide medical facilities for those diagnosed with the virus.
The construction is in line with the County’s objective of making available no less than three hundred beds to provide isolation capacity for the county in the event of mass infections arising from COVID-19 based on Ministry of Health projections.
The County today has 22 beds fitted with ventilators even as the new facilities are expected to boost this number. Bondo and Siaya COVID-19 isolation wards have 14 and 5 beds respectively while the Siaya Referral Hospital ICU unit has three beds installed with ventilators for such use.
Earlier, the governor officially opened the Siaya County CT-scan Unit. His Excellency also inspected the KShs. 12 million County Blood bank project, the fully equipped dialysis and the ICU units at the Siaya County Referral Hospital where he urged the public to embrace services at the local facilities and reduce movement to other counties. The blood bank is expected to collect 2,500 units of blood yearly.
The Governor who was accompanied by The County Commissioner, Siaya County Mr. Michael Ole Tialal, Deputy Governor Dr James Okumbe, County Secretary Joseph Ogutu, Health Executive Dorothy Owino, and Governance CECM Dismas Wakla also announced that the CT-scan will start operating in three days time.
His Excellency also used the opportunity to inspect the ongoing construction of the KShs. 394 million Stadium project where he lauded the progress of the works and noted that the project will be complete within the stipulated contract timelines.
