President Kenyatta is keen on the completion of the Thwake Multipurpose Water Development Project. Senior Govt officials have been deployed to assess project progress and ensure it is on track.
The first phase of Thwake Multipurpose Water Development Programme is currently on course. It involves construction of an 80.5m high dam with 688 million cubic meter storage capacity and associated preliminary works.
Phase Two will involve construction of hydropower and substation expected to generate at least 20MW. The third phase will involve development of water supply system to treat and distribute up to 150,000 cubic metres daily to Kitui, Makueni and Machakos counties’ residents
The project also targets irrigation of up to 40,075 hectares of land in Kitui and Makueni counties (approximately 100,000 acres of land). As part of CSR, two blocks of eight classrooms each and a health centre will be constructed in the area.
Ongoing civil works and related activities have created direct and indirect employment of more than 1,200 locals. The project will also improve sanitation and hygiene thereby mitigating threat of disease.
