Nairobi City County is set to construct the first Material Recovery Facility(MRF) in Korogocho, to enhance City’s solid waste management in its commitment to environmental sustainability and community empowerment particularly in the informal settlements.

The MRF project whose aim is to allow for waste sorting and segregation of the dry recyclables, marks a crucial milestone in addressing waste management challenges in Korogocho which is one of Nairobi’s most densely populated informal settlement, setting the stage for long term social, economic and environmental benefits for the community.

” Today marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Nairobi. The ground breaking of Korogocho MRF is not just about infrastructure, it’s about transforming waste into opportunities, improving livelihoods and ensuring that every waste actor is included in our circular economy model.” Said the County Chief Officer for Environment Mr. Geoffrey Mosiria while spearheading the ground breaking ceremony of the MRF.

Mr. Mosiria acknowledged that the County recognizes the invaluable role played by waste pickers, who are generally youth, women and Community Based Organizations in waste management.  He further said that the facility will create jobs, provide market access for recyclable materials and uplift the economic status of the community while ensuring environmental sustainability.

” This milestone would not have been possible without the support of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, UN- habitat, AVSI Foundation, Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (KCIC) and Miss Koch Kenya in making this dream a reality through waste-wise Nairobi Korogocho chapter.” He added.

The County Director for Environment Mr. John Paul Malawi, assured that the County was committed to ensure the success of the MRF project which is expected to enhance solid waste management by engaging the community to establish waste segregation at the source and build the capacity of the community based organizations working on solid waste management in Korogocho.

“We are committed to working with all partners to upscale this initiative, expand sustainable waste management programs and ensure communities benefit from the circular economy model.” Mr. Malawi said.

“I encourage you to embrace and own the project, the County will provide you with balers to help add value to the recycled products, and also link you with markets.” He added.

Mr. Paolo Damato, from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation which is the project’s donor said the project will not only create jobs but also provide a safe place for the community, adding that the project recognizes the important role played by the waste pickers. Mr. Damato called on all partners to renew their commitment towards the success of the project.

Mr. Kahuha from Komb Green Solutions who spoke on behalf of the Community Based Organizations, expressed gratitude towards the project, noting that it will help the community learn on waste sorting at the source and also help them earn a living from the waste.” I’m happy the community around here will have a place to sort waste.” He added.

The event was attended by County Environment and Planning officers, National Government officers, Italian Agency for Development Cooperation team, Representatives from AVSI Foundation and UN Habitat, Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (KCIC), Miss Koch Kenya and several Community Based Organizations.
