Construction of Siaya Referral Hospital Blood Bank Expected to be Completed in Less Than 4 Weeks

Siaya County Government is in the process of putting up a Ksh. 12 million blood bank at Siaya County Referral Hospital.
The strategic facility is expected to work as an intervention for the growing cases of shortage of blood in health facilities in Siaya County and its environs. Further, the frequent referral cases of patients from the county facilities to other counties which ordinarily cost patients huge medical fees are also expected to be cut down.
According to data mined from hospital records, pregnant mothers and road accident victims form the largest segment of patients in need of blood in local hospitals. The blood bank will work as an incentive for continuous blood donation and efficient supply when the need arises.
As part of the build-up process leading to the unveiling of the health facility, Siaya County Health CEC Ms Dorothy Owino last week oversaw the inspection of the construction process. The CEC urged County residents to support the initiative, particularly through donation of blood.
“Our people should embrace the culture of donating blood regularly,” she said, adding that donating of blood comes with health benefits to the donor and may just be the missing link to saving the life of the receiver. This morning as a followup the director of health, Mr Kennedy Oruenjo applauded the achievement by saying, “This would be a milestone for the County Government of Siaya as we would be at a position of having a blood reserve”.
The construction of the blood bank which started early 2019 is mapped for completion by the end of October 2019.
