Held discussions with the Cabinet Secretary for East African Community and Regional Development Adan Mohammed to review reforms being undertaken by the Judiciary to improve Kenya’s business climate. Focused on the expansion of the Small Claims Courts which are a game changer in expediting resolution of commercial disputes falling within the threshold of Sh1 million and below.

The Small Claims Court at Milimani has been in operation since 26th April 2021. Since then, 3,221 cases have been registered with 1,711 heard and determined. So far, commercial claims worth Sh221,614,140 and civil claims worth Sh140,430,461 have been processed. Out of the 63 Magistrates hired by the Judicial Service Commission, 15 will be designated to Adjudicate Claims in the Small Claims Courts as we enhance the capacity in Nairobi and expand to Naivasha, Nyeri, Kajiado, and Machakos.

We also discussed preparations for the upcoming Joint Forum of the East African Chief Justices and Judicial Education Committee hosted by Kenya between December 14th to 17th, 2021. Chief Justices of the six East African partner States acknowledge the importance of regular consultations to appraise the administration of justice at the regional level in efforts to improve the delivery of justice, enhance collaboration and regional integration.
