H.E Governor Johnson Sakaja accompanied by his deputy Njoroge Muchiri today presided over the pass out parade of the third cohort of 54 Fire fighters who underwent a 6-month training at the Nairobi County Fire and Disaster Management Academy in Kangundo road.

In recognition of their unwavering dedication, Governor Sakaja awarded the graduates with trophies and certificates, acknowledging their sacrifice in ensuring the safety of Nairobi’s populace. “I want to start by appreciating the relentless efforts that this entire sector dedicates towards safeguarding lives and property in Nairobi.” Said Governor Sakaja.

“While others run away from danger, these brave individuals run towards it, putting their own safety at risk to manage life-threatening situations. From the reports i received, the department responded to over 800 fire incidents last year, often handling multiple fires in a single day. I want to acknowledge the perilous nature of your duties and I assure you that your efforts have earned you the respect and gratitude of Nairobi’s residents.” He further stated.

The Governor also urged residents to be supportive and kind to these firefighters, rather than castigating and throwing stones.

To ensure their safety and support, he announced plans to collaborate with the police to classify such actions as public offenses under the law. This initiative aims to provide legal protection to the officers as they carry out their critical duties.

In recognizing the importance of the sector and in supporting this great service, he highlighted several initiatives that have been undertaken and future plans to bolster this essential service:

“The County is establishing in new fire stations strategically located near key markets such as Kangemi, Kibra, and the ongoing construction in Gikomba.

Significant resources are being allocated toward disaster mitigation efforts and improving the welfare of firefighters. For instance, the procurement of new Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) is underway to ensure their safety and effectiveness.”

Additionally, the County plans to establish a fully-fledged institution—the Nairobi County Disaster Academy and invest in advanced technology and high-tech equipment to enhance service delivery. The County Government is also partnering with other counties and actively exploring their equal support and the support from donors to strengthen disaster management initiatives.

The Deputy Governor commended the discipline demonstrated by the graduates, highlighting the challenges overcome in achieving such a milestone. Expressing admiration for the dedication displayed by the graduates, he urged the community to emulate their commitment to overcome challenges. “The risk you take in order to save life and property, it takes courage, patriotism and self-control and I want to thank you for choosing to use those qualities not for your own advancement but for the people of Nairobi.”

The County Secretary Mr. Godfrey Akumali, expressed his sense of pride for the team that was graduating and their dedication to save life and property. He commended the firefighters for their dedication and selfless service in protecting the residents of the city.

County Chief officer for Disaster management and Coordination Mr. Bram Simiyu congratulated the graduates on their hard work and perseverance during the past six months of training.
