Kananu Commits to Support Towards the Achievement of Clean Air for Blue Skies

Nairobi City County Deputy Governor and Acting Governor, H.E Ann Kananu has today pledged to continue supporting efforts by Nairobi City County and its partners towards the achievement of Clean Air for blue skies.
Said Ms Kananu, “The Day aims to prioritize the need for healthy air for all while keeping conversations broad enough to encompass other critical issues such as climate change, human and planetary health as well as the Sustainable Development Goals. It will also serves as a rallying call to action to collectively align efforts and claim the right to clean air.”
Ms. Kananu said that air pollution is one of the biggest threats for the environment and affects everyone: humans, animals, crops, cities, forests, aquatic ecosystems. “Air pollution is indeed a significant risk factor for human health conditions, causing allergies, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases as well as lung damage.”
The Acting Governor also called for urgent Air Quality Management.
Nairobi County Executive Environment and Climate Change, Larry Wambua said the task of improving air quality can seem much too overwhelming for individual people or organizations to make a difference on their own, says Mr. Wambua “It’s a cooperative effort. We therefore must adopt means and solutions to mitigate against air pollution
Some of the Air pollution prevention actions include: -Renewable and clean energy production.
The most basic solution for air pollution is to move away from fossil fuels, replacing them with alternative energies like solar, wind and geothermal, Energy conservation and efficiency, Eco-friendly transportation and Green building.
Today in Nairobi City, Digital billboards will commence to live stream real-time air pollution measurements in an effort to increase air quality awareness among the city’s 4.7 million inhabitants.
This initiative, is a collective effort by IQAir, whom with UNEP/DED have launched the world’s largest real-time pollution map at the margins of the WUF 2020, Safaricom, Alpha and Jam Ltd and Metropolitan Star Lite Ltd, Out Of Home (OOH) media providers.
Says Nairobi County Executive for Environment and Climate Change, Larry Wambua, “The aim of this innovation is to test how real-time air quality information for some of the most harmful type of air pollution, fine airborne particles, known as PM2.5 can engage the public through social media platforms and also inspire local government and the private sector to weigh into the conversation and drive positive change. The data will be streamed to digital billboards at 4 critical location in the city (Moi Avenue, University Way, Mbagathi Way and JKIA).
The Nairobi air quality awareness demonstration project is the result of a unique collaboration between the UN, the private sector, academia, non-governmental and local governmental organizations.
