This morning, CAS IG (RTD) J. Boinett was handed over the Final Report by the Taskforce on Human-Wildlife Compensation Schemes. [CS Najib Balala] I set up this taskforce to operationalize the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act (WCMA) of 2013; to establish a National Wildlife Compensation Insurance Scheme. The taskforce mandate was to make clear recommendations to the Government on the most suitable scheme(s) to adopt in order to enhance human-wildlife co-existence.
Today, Kenya marks a milestone towards modernizing the management of Human-Wildlife conflicts in the Country. The new approach incorporates the insurance sector, to undertake Human-Wildlife conflicts claims administration process and payments to affected persons.
The Kenya Wildlife Service has partnered with Northern Range lands Trust to develop a software that monitors Human-Wildlife Conflict. The software will feed live information of all Human-Wildlife incidents, with geographical locations, and identifying each incident by species and circumstances.
I take this opportunity to thank the members of the Taskforce and Secretariat, for their efforts and diligence during the production of the Human-Wildlife Compensation Schemes Report. Asante! – CS Tourism and Wildlife Najib Balala
